Let Your Children Entertain You

One of my favorite scenes in the musical “Gypsy” is “Let Me Entertain You.” In the scene, Baby June, her sister, Louise, and also some boys, dance, sing, and entertain. Baby June is dressed in the cutest girls dance clothes in that act. The girls kick and twirl and sing in kids leotards and girls tutus.

My family just loves that musical and other musical plays. I buy movie musicals in DVD format and we watch the stories over and over again. We listen to the music from those plays until everyone in the family knows every song by heart. We also act out some of the stories and sing the songs.

My girls also have curled their hair like Baby June and put on their girls dancewear and have shown me their own versions of “Let Me Entertain You!” Learning about musicals can be fun when kids put on their own shows based on what they see and hear.

How To Encourage Children to Appreciate Musical Theatre:

  • Take your children to see live musical plays if possible.
  • Listen to songs from musicals in the car.
  • Expose children to famous Broadway musicals and shows that can be obtained on DVD from the library.
  • Enroll children in theater classes that encourage singing and dancing.
  • Find out if your children can participate in a musical play that may need children in the cast.
  • Expose your children to ballet, dance, and gymnastic classes.
  • Encourage children to dress up, pretend, dance, act, and sing.
  • Do a lot of singing and dancing at home.
  • Make musical instruments available for your children so they can play with instruments and explore music.
